If you are planning to be out of the country for an extended period (two months or longer) you will require Long Stay cover. Navigator Travel Insurance specialises in this type of cover for travellers participating in a gap year, studying or volunteering overseas, taking a career break, backpacking to individual destinations or on round the world itineraries or working holidays.

The GOLD and SILVER policies cover a good range of sports and activities and give the opportunity to upgrade to include cover for the more extreme activities, such as skydiving, high altitude trekking and sports such as rugby and polo. The option is available to add wintersports cover for up to 31 days, or fo the entire duration, at extra cost.

These policies are flexible, allowing you to extend your duration whilst abroad, if you decide to stay longer than originally planned, or to upgrade the policy later, to include more extreme sports and activities, if required.

Maximum age on these policies is 64 years.

Hints & tips

Check age limits of these policies carefully. Age limits on long stay policies are lower than short stay or annual multi trip policies. Navigator Long Stay policies have a maximum age of 64 years.

Check the sports and activities cover. Navigator Long Stay policies cover a wide range of sports, sometimes at extra cost.

Unused periods of travel insurance are non refundable. Policies can be extended after departure, so if in doubt about the duration of your trip, buy a shorter duration that you are comfortable with and extend if necessary. This can work out slightly more expensive.

Maximum durations are 15 months on Navigator Long Stay policies.

These policies can be commenced if you are already overseas, under certain circumstances, if you find yourself uninsured for some reason. This cannot be done online, as the policies are slightly different.

You need to call 0161 973 6435 to arrange cover in these circumstances. These policies, when commenced from overseas, will not cover any pre-existing situations at all, so if you have a problem that you already know about at the time of purchasing the policy, claims arising from this situation are NOT covered.

Medical conditions

Any pre-existing medical condition needs to be declared if you want to be covered for claims arising from it. You will often need to go through the medical screening process to get specific confirmation that your condition can be covered.

For Silver & Gold policies call 0845 003 5244

1 – Within the last 12 months, have any of you suffered from, been investigated for, diagnosed with, received treatment or taken any medication for;
a. any cancer or malignant condition.
b. any lung related condition (other than stable, well controlled asthma that requires not more than 2 medications, including inhalers).
c. any heart related condition (including angina)?
NB – You must contact Healthcheck if you take regular medication for any of these conditions.

2 – Do any of you suffer from any other medical condition that has required referral to or consultation with a specialist clinic or hospital for treatment, tests or investigation within the 12 months prior to the date this insurance was arranged or the date that you subsequently made arrangements for a trip?
NB – Continuing regular medication that is taken at home for a stable, well controlled condition does not amount to ‘treatment; in this context and so does not need to be screened. If you have stable conditions that require no more than two routine check-ups/reviews per year each then you do not need to be screened.

3 – Has your doctor increased your regular prescribed medication in the last three months?

If you have answered NO to all 3 questions – Your medical conditions (if any) will be covered

If your answer to ANY of these 3 questions is YES – There is no cover for claims related directly or indirectly to these conditions unless declared to us and confirmed in writing.
However, cover may be available by contacting Healthcheck on 0845 003 5244
Please note that there will be an additional premium charged if you use this service, the amount of which varies and is determined by the details declared. Any special terms that are necessary will be explained to you and confirmed in writing. They will quote you a medical reference number, which will be asked for when buying cover.

4 – Are you planning to take part in any hazardous activities (see general exclusions on page 7) or are you aware of any other circumstances that could reasonably be expected to give rise to a claim, such as the state of health of a close relative whose health may cause you to cancel or curtail your trip? If so, please contact Voyager Insurance Services on 01483 562662.

Sports & Adventure

Our policies cover a wide range of hazardous sports and activities, many of them at the basic price. However some require either a 50% (Action) or 100% (Action Plus) supplement to be paid on Gold policies or 75% (Action) or 150% (Action Plus) on Silver policies.

Motorcycle touring is covered on both GOLD and SILVER policies, with no restrictions on the cc of the bike, as long as a full UK license is held and crash helmets worn. Personal Liability cover is excluded for claims arising from driving or riding motor vehicles or riding animals.
